Question 50

In this question use g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8 \text{ m s}^{-2}g=9.8 m s−2.

A supply pod is launched from a platform at the top of a sea cliff, 181818 metres above the level beach below. The pod is projected at an angle of 40∘40^\circ40∘ above the horizontal with an initial speed of 24.5 m s−124.5 \text{ m s}^{-1}24.5 m s−1.

Exactly 1.21.21.2 seconds after the pod is launched, an automated recovery vehicle sets off from the base of the cliff, starting from a position directly beneath the launch point. The vehicle moves in a straight line across the beach with a constant acceleration a m s−2a \text{ m s}^{-2}a m s−2.

The vehicle successfully catches the pod at a height of 1.51.51.5 metres above the beach.
