With global populations rising and concerns over the environmental footprint of traditional pastoral farming increasing, many nations are looking to cellular agriculture. Cultured meat, produced by in vitro cultivation of animal cells, has been proposed as a sustainable alternative.
In 2021, a pioneering biotechnology startup established a state-of-the-art bioreactor facility in Country Y to produce cultivated chicken. The facility uses high-capacity stainless steel bioreactors, specialized growth media containing amino acids and growth factors, and highly automated climate-control systems to foster cell proliferation. Some critics point out that while this technology significantly reduces land and water use compared to traditional cattle ranching, the high electricity demands of maintaining precise temperature controls in large-scale bioreactors pose challenges to achieving carbon neutrality. However, industrial reports indicate that cultured meat production is up to 15 times more efficient in terms of physical footprint per hectare than traditional beef farming.
Meanwhile, global investment trends fluctuate. While North America has seen a surge in venture capital funding for cellular agriculture, several startups in Asia have faced regulatory delays and high research and development costs.
Fig. 1 shows the retail sales of cultured poultry products in Country Y between 2021 and 2024, showing fluctuations as production scaled up.
