Document 1: AI sector remuneration and productivity in the UK tech market

Research shows the ratio of Senior AI Software Engineer remuneration to median employee remuneration in the UK tech sector has changed significantly over the past decade (see Fig. 1). In 2024, Senior AI Software Engineers at major tech firms earned 6.5 times more than a typical employee in the sector.

Senior AI Software Engineers earned an average of £300,000 in 2024, an increase of 15.4% from 2023. In that same period, the average annual revenue generated per engineer, which serves as a proxy for their productivity and contribution to firm revenue, also recovered significantly following a brief contraction in 2023 (see Fig. 2).
