The Decarbonisation of Regional Aviation in France

Sustainable and hybrid-electric propulsion systems, including hydrogen-fuel-cell and battery-electric hybrid aircraft, are capturing a rapidly growing share of the regional commuter aviation sector in France. In 2023, hybrid-electric and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) flight hours on domestic routes surpassed traditional fossil-fuel turboprop flights for the first time.

France's Minister for Ecological Transition noted, "This transition is a cornerstone of our flight path to net-zero domestic aviation by 2050. We have successfully encouraged lower-emission commercial flight while protecting our national aerospace workforce, and we plan to aggressively expand hydrogen and electric recharging infrastructure at secondary airports over the coming decade."

AeroVolt is one of the premier aerospace manufacturers headquartered in France. It represents 15% of regional aircraft production, employs 35,000 highly skilled engineers and technicians, and supports operators through a network of 180 regional maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. It is currently the second-largest regional aircraft builder in Europe, closely behind GallicAir.

AeroVolt is navigating a profound structural shift: regional airlines are moving away from outright fleet ownership toward subscription-based leasing platforms, fractional ownership, and digital capacity-sharing networks. Consequently, AeroVolt's MRO facilities are transitioning into multi-energy servicing hubs where regional operators can swap battery packs, source green hydrogen, or perform rapid charging. Senior management is actively managing this transition, aiming to reposition the historic manufacturer into an integrated aviation-as-a-service provider while complying with strict European aviation safety and emission mandates.

In response, AeroVolt's board has made significant acquisitions: purchasing a cloud-based flight planning and scheduling software provider (SkyRoute) and acquiring a developer of aviation-grade solid-state battery technology. The long-term vision is to establish AeroVolt as a comprehensive flight-solutions partner rather than a mere hardware manufacturer.

However, high capital requirements persist. The production of lightweight, aviation-grade carbon-composite battery modules remains extremely expensive. Aerospace consensus suggests that commercial viability for clean regional flights requires battery module costs to drop below €220 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
