The UK’s Accession to the CPTPP

In 2023, the United Kingdom formally signed the treaty to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a vast free trade area spanning 11 Pacific Rim nations including Japan, Canada, Australia, and Vietnam. This bloc represents a market of approximately 500 million people and, with the UK's accession, accounts for around 15% of global GDP.

The agreement commits member states to removing tariffs on over 95% of traded goods, with particular benefits highlighted for UK exporters of whisky, machinery, and automotive components. Furthermore, the CPTPP reduces non-tariff barriers by establishing common standards on digital trade, intellectual property, and investment, while liberalising access to highly protected domestic services markets.

Evaluate the microeconomic and macroeconomic effects of the United Kingdom (UK) participating in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) (Extract G).
