Question 8

The chart lists several regions of the electromagnetic spectrum:

| radio | microwave | infrared | visible light | ultraviolet | x-ray | gamma |

a.

Complete the table by giving one radiation from the chart for each use.

You may give each type of radiation once, more than once, or not at all.

Use for radiationType of radiation
Checking bank notes for counterfeiting
Airport security scanners for luggage
Bluetooth short-range device connections

b.

In a vacuum, all types of electromagnetic radiation travel with

  • A the same amplitude
  • B the same frequency
  • C the same speed
  • D the same wavelength
[1]
c.

In 1800, the astronomer William Herschel investigated the properties of sunlight.

He passed a beam of sunlight through a triangular glass prism to split it into a spectrum of colors. He then placed thermometers at different positions along the spectrum, as well as in the regions just outside the visible boundaries (marked as Zone X and Zone Y in the diagram below).

Explain why a thermometer placed in Zone X (just past the red end of the visible spectrum) recorded a significant temperature rise, identifying the type of radiation present and comparing its path to that of the visible rays.

d.

In another experiment, a student wants to minimize the rate of thermal energy transfer by radiation from a hot water brass container to its surroundings. Which surface finish on the container would work best at reducing emission?

  • A matte black
  • B shiny silver
  • C matte white
  • D rough grey
