Question 27

A portable camping heater uses liquefied propane from a small canister.

a.

Propane boils at a temperature of −42∘C-42^\circ\text{C}−42∘C to form propane gas. Convert this temperature to the Kelvin scale.

[1]
b.

State one way in which the molecules in propane gas are different from the molecules in liquid propane.

[1]
c.

Explain how the molecules of propane gas exert a pressure on the inside walls of the canister.

[3]
d.

When the valve is opened, a volume of 450 cm3450\text{ cm}^3450 cm3 of gas at a pressure of 240 kPa240\text{ kPa}240 kPa escapes from the canister. As the gas escapes, its pressure decreases to the atmospheric pressure of 100 kPa100\text{ kPa}100 kPa.

Calculate the volume of the escaped gas at a pressure of 100 kPa100\text{ kPa}100 kPa, assuming the temperature remains constant.

[3]
e.

Once the valve is closed, the gas remaining inside the canister cools down, so its temperature decreases. Explain what happens to the pressure of the gas in the canister.
