Question 6

An investigation is designed to study the vertical motion of a weighted 12 cm12\text{ cm}12 cm square piece of card as it falls.

The student plans the experiment as follows:

  • Drop the card from 6 different heights: 15 cm15\text{ cm}15 cm, 30 cm30\text{ cm}30 cm, 45 cm45\text{ cm}45 cm, 60 cm60\text{ cm}60 cm, 75 cm75\text{ cm}75 cm, and 90 cm90\text{ cm}90 cm.
  • Measure the final speed of the card using a light gate at the bottom of the fall.
  • Repeat the final speed measurement 3 times for each height and calculate the mean average.
  • Keep the initial speed of the card at exactly zero for each drop.
a.

Identify the independent variable and the dependent variable in this investigation.

b.

At a height of 75 cm75\text{ cm}75 cm, the student records the following raw data for the final speed:

  • Trial 1: 3.14 m/s3.14\text{ m/s}3.14 m/s
  • Trial 2: 3.09 m/s3.09\text{ m/s}3.09 m/s
  • Trial 3: 3.15 m/s3.15\text{ m/s}3.15 m/s

Calculate the average (mean) final speed for this height. Give your answer to 222 decimal places.
