What thermal expansion means

What thermal expansion means

Particle diagrams comparing a solid, liquid and gas before and after heating, with solids expanding least, liquids more, and gas under a piston expanding most at constant pressure

Thermal expansion is the increase in size of a substance when its temperature rises. In solids this can mean a larger length, width, or height, while in liquids and gases it is usually described as an increase in volume.
