Longitudinal sound wave in air with compressions, rarefactions, wavelength, and particle vibrations parallel to wave direction Sound is produced by a vibrating source such as a speaker cone, guitar string, or vocal cords. The vibration pushes and pulls nearby particles, creating compressions and rarefactions, and the wavelength is the distance from one compression to the next.
