Question 18

An investigator is studying the optical properties of lenses and prisms.

a.

A converging lens has principal focal points F1F_1F1 (on the left) and F2F_2F2 (on the right), each at a focal length fff from the lens center. An object OOO is placed on the principal axis to the left of the lens, at a distance less than fff (between F1F_1F1 and the lens).

Describe how two standard rays originating from the top of the object OOO can be traced to find the position of the image.

[3]
b.

State three terms from the list below that correctly describe this image: diminished, enlarged, inverted, real, same size, upright, virtual.

[2]
c.

The object OOO is now moved further to the left, so that its distance from the lens is between fff and 2f2f2f. State three terms from the same list that correctly describe this new image.

[2]
d.

A beam of red light is incident on a triangular glass prism, refracts inside, and emerges from the other side. A beam of violet light is now directed along the exact same initial path as the red light.

Compare the deviation of the violet ray inside the prism with that of the red ray, and explain your reasoning in terms of speed of light and refractive index.

[3]
e.

Describe the path of the emerging violet ray relative to the emerging red ray as they exit the prism.
