Question 9
a.

Explain how gas molecules exert a force on a solid surface.

[2]
b.

Explain the decrease in pressure of a gas when its volume is increased at constant temperature.

[2]
c.

A cylinder of volume 4.0×103 cm34.0 \times 10^3\text{ cm}^34.0×103 cm3 contains air at a pressure of 9.0×105 Pa9.0 \times 10^5\text{ Pa}9.0×105 Pa.

A leak develops so that air gradually escapes from the cylinder until the air remaining in the cylinder is at atmospheric pressure. The atmospheric pressure is 1.0×105 Pa1.0 \times 10^5\text{ Pa}1.0×105 Pa.

Calculate the volume of the escaped air, when measured at atmospheric pressure. Assume that the temperature of the air stays constant.
