A student hangs a spring vertically from a support.
Describe how the length of the suspended spring can be measured accurately.
With no load, the spring is 15.0 cm long. With a load of 3.0 N on the end of the spring, its length is 19.5 cm. Calculate the extension of the spring.
The load is pulled further down and then released. At a particular instant after it is released, the forces acting on the load are a downward gravitational force of 3.0 N and an upward force from the spring of 4.2 N. Calculate the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the load, and state its direction.
