Question 21

A container is full of glycerin. The total mass of the container of glycerin is 6.4 kg6.4\text{ kg}6.4 kg and the gravitational field strength is 10 N/kg10\text{ N/kg}10 N/kg.

a.

Calculate the total weight of the container of glycerin.

[2]
b.

The container of glycerin is hung from a spring of unstretched length 15 cm15\text{ cm}15 cm. The limit of proportionality of the spring is not exceeded and its length increases to 31 cm31\text{ cm}31 cm.

(i) State what is meant by the limit of proportionality.

(ii) The glycerin is poured into a measuring tank. The empty container stretches the spring to a length of 19 cm19\text{ cm}19 cm.

Calculate:

  1. the force that stretches the spring to a length of 19 cm19\text{ cm}19 cm,
  2. the mass of the glycerin in the measuring tank.

(iii) The volume of the glycerin in the measuring tank is 0.004 m30.004\text{ m}^30.004 m3. Calculate the density of the glycerin.

[8]
c.

Explain, in terms of their molecules, why the density of the glycerin is greater than that of oxygen gas.
