Question 10

A soft rubber ball of mass 0.40 kg is dropped, in a vacuum, from a height of 3.6 m onto a hard floor. The ball then bounces. Take the acceleration of free fall to be g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\text{ m/s}^2g=9.8 m/s2.

a.

State the main energy transfers taking place when:

(i) the ball is falling,

(ii) the ball is in contact with the floor and is being compressed,

(iii) the ball is expanding back to its original shape and starts rising from the floor.

[3]
b.

Calculate the speed with which the ball hits the floor.

[3]
c.

After rebounding, the ball rises to a maximum height of 2.7 m. Suggest why the height to which the ball rises is less than the height from which it was dropped.
