Question 128

A student sets up a circuit to find the resistance of a piece of nichrome wire connected between two terminals, PPP and QQQ.

a.

State: (i) whether the ammeter must be connected in series or in parallel with the nichrome wire to measure the current passing through it. (ii) whether the voltmeter must be connected in series or in parallel with the wire between terminals PPP and QQQ to measure the potential difference across it.

[2]
b.

The student obtains the following readings:

  • The reading on the voltmeter is 3.15 V3.15\text{ V}3.15 V.
  • The reading on the ammeter is 0.180 A0.180\text{ A}0.180 A.

Calculate the resistance of the nichrome wire. Show your working and include the unit in your final answer.
