Question 18

When no input is connected to a cathode-ray oscilloscope (CRO), a straight horizontal line is displayed along the central axis of the screen (representing zero volts).

Three different circuits are connected in turn to the CRO input:

  1. Circuit 1: A resistor connected to a direct current (DC) battery.
  2. Circuit 2: A resistor connected to an alternating current (AC) power supply.
  3. Circuit 3: A resistor connected to an AC power supply in series with a diode.

Describe the key features of the trace that would be observed on the CRO screen for each of these three circuits. In your description, specify the shape of the trace and its position relative to the central zero-voltage axis.
