How radiation is detected

How radiation is detected

Schematic showing a radioactive source, GM tube detector, counter, and background radiation sources reaching the detector

Radioactive materials contain unstable nuclei that emit ionising nuclear radiation. In school experiments, a Geiger-Müller tube, or GM tube, is used as the detector and is connected to a counter.
