What indices show

Three-panel diagram showing x^3 times x^2 gives x^5, x^5 divided by x^2 leaves x^3 by cancellation, and (x^2)^3 expands to x^6

A power is a short way to write repeated multiplication. For example, 43=4×4×44^3 = 4 \times 4 \times 443=4×4×4, so the base is 4 and the index is 3.
