The central wave motif
The central wave motif
A motif is a recurring image, word, object or situation that develops a theme across a text. In Chingonyi's poem, the repeated image of waves is connected to physical movement and sound. The opening descriptions present the waves as something the speaker can observe and hear, through phrases such as "the sound of waves" and "the waves break". The motif can therefore suggest water, sound, memory and movement.
