The mill after closing

An original literary non-fiction-style account of standing in the public viewing gallery of an old flour mill as its machinery stops.

While the mill was running, the floor seemed to be chewing. A deep, regular movement passed through the boards and reached the soles of my shoes. Above it came the quick rattle of a belt, then a thinner ticking sound I could never quite separate from the rest. The guide spoke close to my ear. I saw her mouth finish sentences before I understood their endings.

Flour lay along the gallery rail in a soft white seam. Someone had drawn a finger through it, leaving a clean line no wider than a matchstick. Beyond the rail, the machinery occupied the room with the confidence of heavy furniture that had never been moved. Every empty space seemed to have been left for a turning part or a worker's hand.

The guide signalled towards the far wall. A man raised his arm, and the noise began to loosen. The quick rattle slowed first. Separate knocks emerged from the deeper movement, like stones becoming visible when water drains away. One belt gave a final, uncertain flap. Then the floor stopped answering my feet.

In the new quiet, a pigeon moved on the roof. I could hear the guide's sleeve brush the rail as she turned. The flour on it had not settled during the silence; it had been there all along, patiently recording everything that passed. I looked at the finger mark again. The clean line now seemed less like an interruption than a small measure of the room's enormous work.

How does the writer use language to convey the mill's activity and the effect of its stopping?
