Question 9

Straight lines at the field edge

An original literary non-fiction-style account of watching competitors at a local ploughing match.

The field had been divided into rectangles, each marked with a small board. From the gate, the event looked like an argument conducted entirely in parallel lines. People stood along the edge with hands in their pockets, watching tractors which moved too slowly to provide the excitement their engines seemed to promise.

A steward asked us to remain behind the marked boundary. Beyond it, one driver turned at the end of a strip and stopped. He climbed down, walked a short distance and looked back along the work. Another driver nearby remained in his seat, bent towards something I could not see. The spectators’ conversation paused as if both men had said something worth hearing.

I asked a woman beside me what she was watching. She pointed along the nearest line and said she liked its steadiness. I could see small differences now: one edge wavered, another held a clear course, and a third disappeared briefly behind a clod of earth. The machines had looked similar from the gate. The results beside them did not.

At midday, a judge walked into one rectangle carrying a notebook. The driver waited by his tractor and rubbed a thumb along the edge of a paper cup. No one announced a dramatic decision. The judge bent, wrote something and moved on. Behind us, a child asked when the race was going to start. His father said that it had started some time ago.

Later, the tractors stood silent while their drivers ate beside them. Across the field, the newly turned strips caught the light at different angles. The match had left no finishing line which a stranger could easily point to, only a series of patient claims laid beside one another in the earth.

How does the writer present the quiet competition of the ploughing match?
