Question 1

A common box for the design challenge

Source A: an original imagined statement by a participant in a model-building challenge.

We each received the same box: card, paper fasteners, string and a small sheet of foil. The task was to make a model of a useful invention. I liked knowing that nobody could arrive with an expensive collection and turn the first minute into a comparison of what we owned.

The limits also made me begin. Instead of waiting for the perfect material, I had to ask what this piece of card could become. A bent strip suggested a moving part I had not planned. The finished model was less polished than my first idea, but I could explain the decisions which made it work.

Of course, identical boxes did not give us identical experience. Someone who had built models for years could do things I had never tried. I would keep the common materials and add time to exchange techniques before judging. A fair beginning need not pretend that everybody begins with the same skills.

Source B: an original imagined statement by another participant.

The shared box was a useful starting point, but I would not make it the whole supply. My idea needed a transparent section. The foil could suggest a window, but it could not let someone see through it. I spent more time finding a substitute than developing the reason for that part of the design.

I would allow a limited choice of extra materials from a shared table. That would preserve access without making everybody solve the same material problem. We could explain why we chose each addition, so the finished object would still reveal decisions rather than simply the size of somebody’s private collection.

I agree that buying an advantage should not be the challenge. I also agree that experience matters. A short exchange of techniques would help, provided nobody was required to copy a single approved method. I want a fair opportunity to develop an idea, which may sometimes require different materials rather than identical ones.

Compare the views in Sources A and B about using identical materials in a model-building challenge.
