The copy and the thing it resembles
Original practice source: a commentary about copies of objects in exhibitions.
A copy may allow someone to notice a shape or arrangement which is difficult to see in the original display. Its value depends partly on knowing what has been reproduced and which qualities have changed. A model which explains a form is not necessarily a substitute for every kind of encounter with the original.
The original may matter through its history, material or relationship with particular people. A visitor can value those qualities while still learning from a copy. The difficulty begins when either object is presented without enough explanation, or when resemblance alone is treated as proof that nothing important differs.
An arts magazine is inviting articles on the statement: “Good copies make original objects less important.”
Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
