Question 22

A useful place for a correction

Original practice source: a commentary about correcting a publication.

A correction can reveal a mistake which some readers had not noticed. That may feel embarrassing to the person who wrote the original account. Leaving it uncorrected, however, allows readers to continue relying on something the publisher now knows is wrong.

The correction needs to identify what changed, not merely announce that the page has been improved. It should also avoid turning an ordinary error into a display of the publisher’s impressive honesty. The purpose is to repair the information available to readers and understand what needs checking next time.

A magazine for young writers is inviting articles on the statement: “Publishing a correction makes a writer look less trustworthy.”

Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
