Question 16

What publicity can honestly promise

Original practice source: a commentary about event publicity.

Publicity may describe an event as unforgettable or life-changing. Such words invite an imagined response rather than state a condition the organiser can fully control. Different visitors may experience the same arrangement differently.

That uncertainty does not excuse vagueness about practical facts. The time, location, cost or type of activity can shape whether someone is able to attend at all. An exciting invitation should not require readers to search for the information which makes a choice possible. The challenge is to create interest without allowing enthusiasm to replace an accurate account of what is being offered.

A magazine for young event organisers is inviting articles on the statement: “Publicity should promise an experience, not just describe an event.”

Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
