Art which is allowed to disappear
Original practice source: a commentary about temporary art.
A work may be made for a particular interval rather than indefinite survival. A performance ends, a temporary arrangement is taken apart or a drawing belongs to a surface which will change. Its limited duration can shape the attention people give it.
A record may preserve something useful, but it does not necessarily reproduce the whole encounter. Nor does disappearance automatically make the work valuable. The question is what the temporary form allowed and what, if anything, should remain available afterwards. A short life can be a deliberate choice without becoming a reason to disregard its consequences.
An arts magazine is inviting articles on the statement: “Art should be made to last.”
Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
