The same square at another hour

Original practice source: a commentary about public places through the day.

A square can support different rhythms. Daytime movement may give way to a quieter interval or a planned evening activity. A change in atmosphere is not automatically evidence that the place has stopped working.

People also need enough dependable information to use it. A route, opening time or shared arrangement should not depend entirely on a visitor guessing how things differ after dark. The useful distinction is between allowing a place to change and leaving its users without a clear account of what remains available. Different experiences can belong to the same public space.

A national newspaper is running an essay competition on the statement: “A public place should feel the same at night as it does during the day.”

Write an essay for the competition arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
