A place described in one phrase
Original practice source: a commentary about the identity of a place.
A town may be introduced through a short phrase: a place of making, a place for visitors or a place with a particular shared history. Such a description can give people a starting point and help a common project become recognisable.
The phrase can also leave much of the place outside. Someone living there may not recognise their ordinary experience in the official description, or may belong through a different relationship. A useful identity can invite people to discover more rather than decide in advance which version of local life is the only one that counts.
A national newspaper is running an essay competition on the statement: “A place needs one clear identity.”
Write an essay for the competition arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
