Neatness and the quality of work
Original practice source: a commentary about neat work.
An orderly page can help another person find a sequence, distinguish parts and understand what they are being asked to read. Presentation is part of communication when the result must be used by somebody else.
Neatness can also create an appearance of completion which the ideas do not support. A carefully copied error remains an error, and an untidy first attempt may contain the question which later improves the work. Judging quality requires attention to what the arrangement makes clear and what remains unresolved beneath it.
A national newspaper is running an essay competition on the statement: “Neat work is always better work.”
Write an essay for the competition arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
