Question 24

A collection and the space it asks for

Original practice source: a commentary about collecting.

A collection can make differences noticeable. Someone comparing a small set of objects may begin asking about design, use or the choices which make one example unlike another. Keeping things can become a way of keeping questions available.

The count can also become the purpose. Another addition may matter mainly because the space beside the previous one feels unfinished. A collection asks for room and care, and sometimes other people share those demands. Its value depends on the relationship it supports, not only on how many items can be said to belong together.

A national newspaper is running an essay competition on the statement: “Collecting things is a waste of space.”

Write an essay for the competition arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
