Format, duration and marks: understand the requirement
- Specification focus. Externally assessed • Written examination: 3 hours • Availability: June and November • 100 marks • 100% of the total International GCSE
- What success looks like. The response demonstrates the named skill accurately and purposefully. Relevant evidence, developed reasoning and controlled communication matter more than memorised labels or formulas.
Key Idea
- Translate the specification wording into a decision or action that can be demonstrated under assessment conditions.
Format, duration and marks: a reliable method
- Decode form, audience and purpose. These conditions control voice, content, register and organisation. Make them visible from the opening.
- Plan progression. Give each paragraph a distinct function and arrange ideas for clarity, argument, description or narrative development.
- Craft deliberately. Select precise vocabulary and vary sentence structures to control pace, emphasis and tone. Complexity must remain accurate.
- Edit in layers. Check task fulfilment and organisation first, then grammar, punctuation and spelling. Correct repeated error patterns.
Format, duration and marks: application and improvement
- Worked thinking. For a transactional task, establish an appropriate voice immediately, develop each required point with explanation or example and finish with a clear outcome suited to the form.
- Diagnose and revise. Name the exact weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin development, weak organisation, unsuitable register or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature specifically.
Exam technique
- For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language B 4EB1, follow the exact component instructions and source boundaries. Treat the Spoken Language Endorsement as a separate assessed performance with its own evidence requirements.
Common Mistake
- Do not force a universal paragraph formula onto every task. Choose the structure that makes the required thinking clearest.
Self review
- Can I explain format, duration and marks in my own words?
- Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
- Have I used precise evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
- Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?
