5.2.4 The Bright Lights of Sarajevo

The Bright Lights of Sarajevo: overview and central concerns

  1. Core focus. Tony Harrison depicts ordinary courtship and communal life continuing during the siege of Sarajevo, placing tenderness beside the evidence of violence.
  2. Reading priority. Build an interpretation of the whole extract or text before naming methods. Track changes in viewpoint, tone, pace or understanding, then choose concise evidence that reveals those changes.
Key Idea
  • In an anthology response, precise knowledge matters most when it supports an argument about how the writer shapes meaning and reader response.

The Bright Lights of Sarajevo: four analytical routes

  1. Juxtaposition. Young people queue, flirt and meet while shell damage, shortages and danger remain present, showing resilience without minimising war.
  2. Light and darkness. Limited light conceals identity and danger but also enables intimacy; brightness carries both literal and symbolic force.
  3. Public and private. Large-scale conflict is approached through small human actions, making survival personal rather than abstract.
  4. Ending image. The filled shell crater, associated with death, reflects light and frames a couple, transforming damage without erasing its history.

The Bright Lights of Sarajevo: how to use the text in an assessment

  1. Shape a thesis. Answer the question with a specific claim about the writer's presentation. A strong thesis allows complexity and gives each paragraph a distinct part of the argument.
  2. Analyse selected detail. Use short references, identify the relevant linguistic or structural choice and explain its local effect and contribution to the text as a whole.
  3. Make connections. For coursework or comparative study, connect texts through a shared idea, viewpoint or method. Explain meaningful differences instead of listing surface similarities.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, revise the anthology text as a crafted piece of language as well as a source of ideas. Follow the exact requirements of your Component 2 examination or coursework route.
Common Mistake
  • Do not retell the passage or attach a fixed effect to a technique. Interpret the choice in its precise context and consider a credible alternative where the evidence allows it.
Self review
  • Can I summarise the text's central concern accurately?
  • Can I explain all four analytical routes with precise evidence?
  • Can I track at least one structural or tonal development?
  • Can I connect this text meaningfully to another anthology text?

Tony Harrison presents ordinary courtship and communal life continuing during the siege of Sarajevo. The poem places tenderness, routine and human connection beside shell damage, shortages and the constant danger of violence.

A strong interpretation begins with the whole text: people do not simply escape the war, but create moments of dignity and intimacy within it. This makes survival personal rather than abstract.

In an assessment, use precise knowledge to support an argument about how Harrison shapes meaning and the reader's response. Connect each detail you choose to that wider argument.
