4.1.5 Length of the presentation

Length of the presentation: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. In all cases, the presentation should be prepared and last no longer than 10 minutes.
  2. What success looks like. A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the task.
Key Idea
  • Use the wording of the requirement as a checklist for decisions, not as information to memorise.

Length of the presentation: practical method

  1. Set a clear purpose. Choose a manageable focus and decide what the audience should understand, feel or consider by the end.
  2. Organise for listeners. Use a purposeful opening, signposted main points and a concise conclusion. Make relationships between ideas explicit.
  3. Control spoken delivery. Use pace, pause, emphasis and Standard English appropriately. Notes should support eye contact rather than become a script.
  4. Handle interaction. Listen fully, answer questions directly and elaborate with evidence or examples. Clarify a question when necessary.

Length of the presentation: apply and improve

  1. Worked application. If a listener questions the evidence, acknowledge the concern, answer it with a relevant example and explain how it affects the original claim. This shows listening as well as prepared speaking.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the precise weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, check whether your centre follows the examination or coursework route for Component 2. Follow the instructions for your route and the exact command words on the task.
Common Mistake
  • Do not rely on a universal paragraph formula. The most effective structure is the one that makes the required thinking clear and sustained.
Self review
  • Can I explain length of the presentation without repeating the title?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used relevant evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

The presentation must be prepared to last no longer than 10 minutes. Treat this wording as a checklist for planning decisions, not as a fact to memorise.

A successful presentation uses its limited time purposefully. It selects a manageable focus, supports ideas with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how each choice meets the task.

Use one key question to guide the presentation: what should the audience understand, feel or consider by the end? Keep this intended outcome in mind when deciding what to include.
