3.5.7 Internal standardisation

Internal standardisation: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. Where there is more than one teacher of the non-examined assessment option in a centre, the centre should conduct internal standardisation. This can be carried out by paired marking.
  2. What success looks like. A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the task.
Key Idea
  • Use the wording of the requirement as a checklist for decisions, not as information to memorise.

Internal standardisation: practical method

  1. Interpret the assignment. Identify the assessed objective, required text base, permitted support and final outcome before planning.
  2. Work authentically. Keep research and drafts traceable, acknowledge sources and ensure the submitted wording and decisions are your own.
  3. Develop independently. Use teacher feedback to identify a general improvement, then decide how to apply it. Feedback must not become a rewritten response.
  4. Check compliance. Confirm the word guidance, chosen anthology texts, task wording and submission requirements with your centre.

Internal standardisation: apply and improve

  1. Worked application. A useful drafting record shows the original plan, research notes, a first version and the reasons for later changes. This demonstrates independent development and helps prevent accidental plagiarism.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the precise weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, check whether your centre follows the examination or coursework route for Component 2. Follow the instructions for your route and the exact command words on the task.
Common Mistake
  • Do not rely on a universal paragraph formula. The most effective structure is the one that makes the required thinking clear and sustained.
Self review
  • Can I explain internal standardisation without repeating the title?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used relevant evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

Internal standardisation is the process a centre uses to make sure different teachers apply the same assessment standards to non-examined assessment. It is especially important when more than one teacher assesses the same option.

A common method is paired marking. Teachers independently assess the same work, compare their decisions and discuss any differences by referring to the assessment requirements.

Use the wording of the requirement as a checklist for decisions. The aim is consistency and fairness, not forcing every student to use the same paragraph structure.
