3.5.5 Presentation of the work

Presentation of the work: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. Each piece of non-examined assessment should contain the student’s name, the date on which the work was completed, the mark awarded and a brief teacher comment justifying the mark. This comment should be based on the assessment criteria for the mark range awarded. • Non-examined assessment pieces may be handwritten or word-processed.
  2. What success looks like. A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the task.
Key Idea
  • Use the wording of the requirement as a checklist for decisions, not as information to memorise.

Presentation of the work: practical method

  1. Set a clear purpose. Choose a manageable focus and decide what the audience should understand, feel or consider by the end.
  2. Organise for listeners. Use a purposeful opening, signposted main points and a concise conclusion. Make relationships between ideas explicit.
  3. Control spoken delivery. Use pace, pause, emphasis and Standard English appropriately. Notes should support eye contact rather than become a script.
  4. Handle interaction. Listen fully, answer questions directly and elaborate with evidence or examples. Clarify a question when necessary.

Presentation of the work: apply and improve

  1. Worked application. If a listener questions the evidence, acknowledge the concern, answer it with a relevant example and explain how it affects the original claim. This shows listening as well as prepared speaking.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the precise weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, check whether your centre follows the examination or coursework route for Component 2. Follow the instructions for your route and the exact command words on the task.
Common Mistake
  • Do not rely on a universal paragraph formula. The most effective structure is the one that makes the required thinking clear and sustained.
Self review
  • Can I explain presentation of the work without repeating the title?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used relevant evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

Presentation of the work is about making purposeful choices that help an audience understand, feel or consider something. A successful response supports those choices with relevant evidence or carefully crafted detail.

For non-examined assessment, check that the work includes the student’s name, completion date, mark awarded and a brief teacher comment. The comment should justify the mark by referring to the assessment criteria for the awarded mark range.

Use the wording of the task as a checklist for decisions. Do not treat the requirement as a list of facts to memorise.
