3.5.3 Collaboration

Collaboration: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. Students must work independently in producing their non-examined assessment.
  2. What success looks like. A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the task.
Key Idea
  • Use the wording of the requirement as a checklist for decisions, not as information to memorise.

Collaboration: practical method

  1. Interpret the assignment. Identify the assessed objective, required text base, permitted support and final outcome before planning.
  2. Work authentically. Keep research and drafts traceable, acknowledge sources and ensure the submitted wording and decisions are your own.
  3. Develop independently. Use teacher feedback to identify a general improvement, then decide how to apply it. Feedback must not become a rewritten response.
  4. Check compliance. Confirm the word guidance, chosen anthology texts, task wording and submission requirements with your centre.

Collaboration: apply and improve

  1. Worked application. A useful drafting record shows the original plan, research notes, a first version and the reasons for later changes. This demonstrates independent development and helps prevent accidental plagiarism.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the precise weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, check whether your centre follows the examination or coursework route for Component 2. Follow the instructions for your route and the exact command words on the task.
Common Mistake
  • Do not rely on a universal paragraph formula. The most effective structure is the one that makes the required thinking clear and sustained.
Key Idea
  • Discussion and peer response may help generate ideas, but assessment evidence must remain attributable to the individual student. Record your own decisions and ensure the submitted work is independently produced under the centre's conditions.
Self review
  • Can I explain collaboration without repeating the title?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used relevant evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

Collaboration means using discussion, feedback or shared ideas to improve your thinking while keeping the assessed response attributable to you. In non-examined assessment, you must work independently when producing the final response.

Use the task wording as a checklist for decisions. A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the requirement.
