3.5.1 Setting the two assignments

Setting the two assignments: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. Students must complete two non-examined assignments, which may be self-generated or devised by their teacher. Students can be involved in choosing which texts to write about and the devising of the task. There is no requirement for students in a cohort to write on different texts. Students in a cohort may write on the same texts.
  2. What success looks like. A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the task.
Key Idea
  • Use the wording of the requirement as a checklist for decisions, not as information to memorise.

Setting the two assignments: practical method

  1. Interpret the assignment. Identify the assessed objective, required text base, permitted support and final outcome before planning.
  2. Work authentically. Keep research and drafts traceable, acknowledge sources and ensure the submitted wording and decisions are your own.
  3. Develop independently. Use teacher feedback to identify a general improvement, then decide how to apply it. Feedback must not become a rewritten response.
  4. Check compliance. Confirm the word guidance, chosen anthology texts, task wording and submission requirements with your centre.

Setting the two assignments: apply and improve

  1. Worked application. A useful drafting record shows the original plan, research notes, a first version and the reasons for later changes. This demonstrates independent development and helps prevent accidental plagiarism.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the precise weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, check whether your centre follows the examination or coursework route for Component 2. Follow the instructions for your route and the exact command words on the task.
Common Mistake
  • Do not rely on a universal paragraph formula. The most effective structure is the one that makes the required thinking clear and sustained.
Self review
  • Can I explain setting the two assignments without repeating the title?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used relevant evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

Students must complete two non-examined assignments. An assignment may be self-generated or devised by the teacher, and students may help choose the texts and devise the task.

The wording of the requirement should be used as a checklist for decisions. Students in the same cohort may write about the same texts, so different texts are not required.

A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the task.
