3.4.4 Purpose of the writing

Purpose of the writing: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. The purpose should be to narrate, describe or entertain. • Total of 30 marks for this assignment.
  2. What success looks like. A successful response makes purposeful choices, supports them with relevant evidence or crafted detail, and explains how those choices meet the task.
Key Idea
  • Use the wording of the requirement as a checklist for decisions, not as information to memorise.

Purpose of the writing: practical method

  1. Decode form, purpose and audience. These conditions control voice, content, organisation and register. Make them visible in the opening choices.
  2. Plan a deliberate shape. Order paragraphs so each has a clear role and the piece develops rather than repeats. Use cohesion to express logical links.
  3. Craft for effect. Choose precise vocabulary and vary sentence structures to control tone, pace and emphasis. Imagination must remain coherent.
  4. Proofread systematically. Check meaning and paragraphing first, then grammar, punctuation and spelling. Correct patterns of error, not only obvious slips.

Purpose of the writing: apply and improve

  1. Worked application. In an imaginative task, a recurring concrete detail can link the opening and ending. Sentence length may then shift at the turning point to mark a change in pace or understanding.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the precise weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, check whether your centre follows the examination or coursework route for Component 2. Follow the instructions for your route and the exact command words on the task.
Common Mistake
  • Do not rely on a universal paragraph formula. The most effective structure is the one that makes the required thinking clear and sustained.
Self review
  • Can I explain purpose of the writing without repeating the title?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used relevant evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

The purpose of writing is what the writer aims to achieve for the reader, such as informing, persuading or entertaining. Narrating and describing are ways of writing that can help achieve a purpose: a writer might narrate events to entertain or describe a place to inform.

Treat the task wording as a checklist for decisions. A successful response makes deliberate choices about content, organisation, vocabulary and sentence structure, then uses relevant evidence or crafted detail to meet the task.

The assignment is worth 30 marks, so one isolated technique is not enough. The whole response should show sustained control of purpose, form and audience.
