The survey hut stood at the edge of the salt marsh. From the raised path, its roof merged with the dark bank behind it, while reeds concealed the lower walls. The only approach began at an unmarked break in the fence, some distance before the building came into view. Mara turned there immediately. She had checked water levels at the hut each week and recognised a pale stone beside the path. I had walked past the opening twice before realising that the narrow strip of flattened grass was not simply an animal track.
