A folded square
The old map was brittle, and its edges were discoloured. The conservator laid it on a supporting sheet before unfolding the final panel. Roads that no longer existed crossed the page, linking villages whose names I knew. I reached towards one place and stopped when she moved a soft weight beside it. Looking closely did not require touching. From then on, I kept my hands behind my back while she showed me how the folds had weakened.
From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe the map's physical condition.
