The maintenance log
The caretaker handed me a folder recording repairs to the community hall. Many entries had no date, so the order in which jobs had been attempted was uncertain. Some rooms were identified by their former numbers and others by the numbers introduced after the building was reorganised, but nothing linked the two systems. Several entries consisted only of the word ‘checked’, without naming what had been inspected or recording the outcome. A leaking tap was marked ‘completed’ on one page and ‘awaiting parts’ on another. Although the pages were numbered, pages 14 and 15 were missing from the folder.
Describe the difficulties of establishing what maintenance work had been completed. You may refer briefly to details from the passage.
