1.2.4 Skills of interpretation and analysis

Skills of interpretation and analysis: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. Throughout the qualification, students should develop the skills of interpretation and analysis.
  2. Why it matters. The requirement is demonstrated through relevant decisions and developed evidence, not by repeating terminology or a memorised paragraph formula.
Key Idea
  • Translate the wording into an action: decide what you must identify, interpret, analyse, compare, evaluate, craft or deliver.

Skills of interpretation and analysis: practical method

  1. Read for the whole. Establish situation, viewpoint, purpose and development before selecting isolated details.
  2. Select evidence. Choose concise references that answer the exact question and remain accurate in context.
  3. Explain choices. Show how language or structure shapes meaning, tone and reader response rather than merely naming a device.
  4. Evaluate the result. Test the interpretation against the whole text and consider a credible alternative where evidence permits.

Skills of interpretation and analysis: apply the skill

  1. Worked approach. Begin with a precise claim, support it with a carefully chosen example, explain the reasoning or crafted choice, and connect the result back to the task.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the exact weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, follow the exact component route and command words. Balance textual knowledge, developed analysis and controlled writing.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid generic effects and universal formulas. Every explanation or crafted choice must fit this task, text, purpose and audience.
Self review
  • Can I explain skills of interpretation and analysis in my own words?
  • Can I apply the method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

Interpretation means working out what a text communicates, including its situation, viewpoint, purpose and development. Analysis means explaining how deliberate choices in language or structure create meaning, tone and a response in the reader.

The skill is shown through relevant decisions and developed evidence. Repeating terms such as “simile” or “structure” is not enough unless the explanation connects the choice to the exact task and text.

Translate the question into an action: identify, interpret, analyse, compare, evaluate, craft or deliver.

The survey above the roof

On the roof, the wind pushed the paper record against my hand whenever I lifted the clipboard. The sensor's serial number was on its underside, so I had to read it using a small mirror. Salt had obscured the last two digits. Below us, the ventilation fans made it difficult to hear my colleague's instructions. We could only remain in the marked walkway; the unit stood just beyond easy reach. Then a shower began, leaving bright drops on the lens of the mirror. We decided to pause rather than turn an incomplete reading into a confident entry.

Describe the difficulties of recording the sensor details. You may support your points with brief quotations.
