Question 69

The winter garden doors

Before opening the winter garden to visitors, I wiped a strip across the inside of the glass doors. The panes were misted with condensation, and their lower edges were streaked with grime. Light entered in a pale band above the benches; the rest of the room remained dim. Through the cleared strip I could see the gravel path outside, but everywhere else the garden beyond was only a blur.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe the condition of the glass before the writer wiped it.
