Question 58

Inside the bell tower

The ladder ended beneath a low wooden platform. Dust lay undisturbed across the boards, and the air was stale enough to taste. Only a narrow slit admitted daylight, leaving the mechanism above me indistinct. The custodian climbed past without hesitation, placing each foot as confidently as if the tower had been brightly lit.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe the air inside the bell tower and how clearly the mechanism can be seen.
