Question 46

The projected line

The laser projected a line across the wall of the unfinished room. On the rough plaster it was broken, disappearing into small hollows, and faint where daylight reached the surface. The surveyor drew the blind and moved the instrument closer. I had assumed that using a measuring device meant simply reading a number. Here, making the result visible required its own adjustments before anyone could decide where the new shelf should go.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe the projected line before the surveyor made adjustments.
