Question 22

The fragments on the tray

Before attempting a join, the restorer sorted the fragments by the curve of their edges and logged each piece on a numbered sheet. She was nimble, rotating a narrow sliver between two padded fingertips until its painted line met the next fragment exactly. She worked in a disciplined order, completing and checking one section of the bowl before beginning another. By late afternoon, no pieces had been misplaced.

Select from the passage two words or phrases: one showing the restorer's delicate manual skill and one showing her methodical way of working.
