Question 98

The downward path

Our guide stopped before the cave entrance. The path was steep, and the stones underfoot were slick after the morning rain. He asked us to keep both hands free and explained where the handrail ended. From the car park, the opening had looked close enough to reach in a minute. Now the distance seemed less important than each individual step. I put my camera away and let the person ahead of me move further down before I followed.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe why the approach required careful footing.
