Question 96

The view from the landing

The landing was dim, even in the middle of the afternoon. It was draughty where the frame of the outer door no longer met the wall. The inspector held a strip of paper beside the gap before adding a note to her form. I had walked through the space for months and described it only as unpleasant. Her visit gave separate names and possible causes to things I had previously treated as one unchangeable feeling.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe conditions on the landing.
