Question 69

Source A: A short pause

A local newspaper columnist writes about the council's decision to close Millbrook Pool for repairs.

At 7.30 on Monday, the council pinned a notice to the pool gate. It called the closure a “short pause”. The notice said repairs would take a year.

Inside, the pool was not silent. Children were splashing in the shallow end; an instructor was counting lengths with a whistle between her teeth. “We come here every week,” one swimmer told me. “Where are we meant to go now?”

At the council meeting, a councillor said, “We have listened to local people.” Yet the residents who had come to speak waited in the corridor because the meeting room was full. The council's plan offers no replacement pool. The nearest one means two bus journeys.

A year is a long time to ask people to manage without a place they use every week. On my way home, I passed the notice again. Rain had softened its corners, but “short pause” was still easy to read.

How does the writer use language and structure to shape the reader’s response to the council’s decision?

You may wish to consider:

  • the description of the notice and the pool
  • the contrast between the council’s words and residents’ experiences
  • the ending.

Support your answer with detailed examples from the text, including brief quotations.
